It’s amazing what you can find when you take on a home renovation, but this woman has horrified the internet by revealing the strange discovery she made while stripping wallpaper.

As TikTok user Kirsty, who goes by the account @vileworld, was peeling back the wallpaper and plastering of her staircase, she noticed at the top of the stairs that part of the wallpaper was concealing a hole in the wall, a type of small of compartment. “Thinking you might find a stash,” the overlay text read.

Using her phone as a flashlight, Kirsty saw drawings, seemingly done by a child named Lewis, who even signed his name on the inside of the wall.

This seemed no place for children, so the homeowner was left slightly terrified by the idea that one was in there. “Not a time out place for the kids,” she wrote.

After making the shock discovery, Kirsty shared the footage on social media where it went viral and amassed more than 310,900 views since November 11.

Love it or hate it, home renovations are a great way to spruce up any space and give it a new lease of life. But recent polling by Statista showed that younger generations are far less interested in renovating their property, whether because of time constraints or financial ones. Just 27 percent of Generation X (aged 43 to 58) property owners had given their home a new look in 2022, compared to 59 percent of boomers (aged 59 to 68).

Explaining how she came across the discovery in the first place, the caption layered over the video reads: “When it’s 11pm at night, you’ve nearly ended your life stripping the last bit of wallpaper at the top of the stairs and the curiosity has got the better of you.”

Alongside the viral video, Kirsty admitted that what she found during the home renovation “caught [her] by surprise,” and she wasn’t sure what to do with the knowledge of what she found. Jokingly, she wrote on TikTok: ‘Lewis are you OK love?”

Many TikTok users were on hand to share their own thoughts about how the doodles found their way to such a peculiar spot.

With over 1,800 likes and numerous comments on the post, TikTok was awash with reaction to the video, as one comment reads: “So that’s where you hide us then.”

Although, some users found more sensible conclusions, as another person responded: “The child probably drew on the board before it was fitted to the wall to fix the wall.”

While one social media user wrote: “There was [probably] a window there, I had one above my door in my bedroom so [you] can see through the hall into the bedroom.”

Newsweek reached out to @vileworld via TikTok for comment. We could not verify the details of the case.
